  3. Overview: A landlocked, resource-poor country in an early 
  4. stage of economic development, Burundi is predominately 
  5. agricultural with only a few basic industries. Its economic 
  6. health is dependent on the coffee crop, which accounts for 
  7. an average 90% of foreign exchange earnings each year. The 
  8. ability to pay for imports therefore continues to rest largely 
  9. on the vagaries of the climate and the international coffee 
  10. market.
